HSRP and VRRP configuration examples on the Cisco routers


HSRP and VRRP config (real ip address of routers will be 10.1.6.1)

We are using group number 1. preemption is enabled, so higher priority will win when it is on.




VRRP config (RFC3768):

Router1(config)#interface vlan 1
Router1(config-if)#ip address 10.1.6.100 255.255.255.0
Router1(config-if)#vrrp 1 ip 10.1.6.1
Router1(config-if)#vrrp 1 preempt
Router1(config-if)#vrrp 1 priority 100

Router2(config)#interface vlan 1
Router2(config-if)#ip address 10.1.6.101 255.255.255.0
Router2(config-if)#vrrp 1 ip 10.1.6.1
Router2(config-if)#vrrp 1 preempt
Router2(config-if)#vrrp 1 priority 120

HSRP config (Cisco protocol):

Router1(config)#interface vlan 1
Router1(config-if)#ip address 10.1.6.100 255.255.255.0
Router1(config-if)#standby 1 ip 10.1.6.1
Router1(config-if)#standby 1 preempt
Router1(config-if)#standby 1 priority 100

Router2(config)#interface vlan 1
Router2(config-if)#ip address 10.1.6.101 255.255.255.0
Router2(config-if)#standby 1 ip 10.1.6.1
Router2(config-if)#standby 1 preempt
Router2(config-if)#standby 1 priority 120
